Vision week 2

Wednesday:
Wednesday morning we went out taking photographs using the digital cameras experimenting with different settings such as aperture, shutterspeed, iso and macro. My work for photography is found on my photography blog here

Wednesday afternoon in 3D I researched some relief sculpt artists and produced a quick plan of how my relief will be set out from a diagram in my sketch book

Thursday:
Thursday morning in art history we produced a written piece on Jorge and Lucy Orta and Josephson which is found on the post prior to this one
and Thursday afternoon I produced a self portrait of myself as seen here

Friday:
Friday morning I finished up my 3D research and began an A3 painting working from one of my photos used in my primary research

What materials is their work made out of?
Their sculpture work is created using materials such as aluminium and Bronze on their Ubelka piece and then painted using epoxy paint and enamel on their Ubelka piece again. For some of their sculpture art they use found recyclable objects such as plastic bottles, an example of this are their clouds pieces.

What is the scale of their work?
Their sculpture pieces are usually created on a large scale, their Spirits of Huveaune pieces are around 200cm to 250cm high and their other sculpture pieces are usually scaled around the same dimensions

In what context do they display their work?
Their work is displayed both indoors and outdoors. Their spirit pieces are permanently placed at the sculpture park to interact with the surroundings like the sculpture placed in the lake for example as it provides the right setting for the piece. Some of their other pieces such as their clouds are placed in exhibitions to be viewed with other pieces of art.

What are they inspired by / what influences their work?
Their pieces are largely influenced by social situations and ecological issues. They focus their work on tackling problems in the world and they travel to regions of the world stricken with issues to draw influence into their work.

What are the main ideas / concepts behind their work?
Some of the common themes I have seen in their work are elements of fantasy and myth gathered from their Spirit pieces and their clouds containing concepts of magic carpets. They combine these ideas with the world issues and the things they have seen and gathered from those issues.

 

Josephsohn

What materials is their work made out of?
Josephsohn’s sculptures are created using plaster and bronze

What is the scale of their work?
Josephsohn’s scales of sculpture range, his half figures are very large pieces up to 80cm high whereas his smaller sculptures are around 20 cm high.

In what context do they display their work?
Josephsohn mainly displays his work in indoor exhibitions however at the sculpture park, his work is displayed out in the gardens as due to the texture it fits in like a natural form.

What are they inspired by / what influences their work?
His sculptures are inspired by particular people or features from portraits

What are the main ideas / concepts behind their work?
Josephson’s style is focused on capturing intimacy, experience and presence of the human form through sculpture.

 

 

Back to college, Vision week 1

New college days so my posts are gonna be different to last year's format. Wednesday, Thursday and Friday.

Wednesday:
We have begun thoroughly learning to use the digital cameras, the functions and buttons because we have begun a new qualification in photography and we will set up a new blog for this.
In the afternoon I printed my contact sheets from primary research and a few A4 photographs that I will work on in my Option lessons and drawing lessons

Thursday:
For the morning we have Art history and we looked at sculpture artists and talked about an upcoming trip to a sculpture park and watched an interview with Lucy Orta, a sculpture artist who works with her husband Jorge
In the afternoon we got back into a drawing frame of mind and did some peer drawings of the class and some portraits. I've definitely got rusty at drawing figures in full so I plan to practice whenever I can.

Friday:
Fridays are our option days so I researched panoramic painters as part of my work, this clued me into a style of work I should look into myself and I looked at Mary Giacomini, Kiril Stanchev and Elizabeth Tyndall. I then produced a quick sample painting to get me back into a frame of mind in painting townscapes

I think I may have missed a week updating this blog so instead I'll just post all my work that I've done since the last post :) enjoy.

My first FMP piece is in the style of Bruce Timm and is based on my photographs as a baby

My second piece is in the style of Frank Miller and I did this with a Black Marker pen. Undiluted indian ink would have worked better but I only discovered this later on. It is based on my photographs from nursery

My third piece is a painting and collage based on the work of Dave McKean. For this I used photos of me at primary school

My fourth piece is an acrylic painting in the style of Jack Kirby based on my high school days.

After pencils, using a black marker pen I added a hard edge to the subject

I then inked the piece using diluted indian ink

Next I added blue ink to the piece as I began to colour it

Finally using blue, red, green ink and watered down yellow acrylic I coloured the piece finishing my fifth piece in the style of Mike Mignola and showing my first day of college

For this I worked in the style of Alex Ross using goache paints and acrylic paints to created this mixed media piece showing me working on my FMP to symbolize the current stage of my life

FMP week 8

Tuesday:
Tuesday morning I had my cover mock ups printed out along with my reference photographs of me growing up to stick in my book to show what I'm working from. I then drew my first cover mock up working in the style of Bruce Timm, took my board and another piece of stretched paper to work on my second cover in the style of Frank Miller at home.

Wednesday:
In the morning I was upstairs drawing my third cover but due to other commitments involving helping one of my class mates in his photography project so we missed graphics unfortunately but made it back in time for Art History where we discussed the positives and negatives of Abstract and Traditional art.

Friday:
Friday morning I was painting my third cover in the style of Dave Mckean by incorporating collage into my work and painting more expressively.
In the afternoon I was sketching out my fourth cover which I finished sketching at the weekend and my next step with it is painting.

FMP week 7

Tuesday:
Tuesday I coloured my Mignola style and Miller style drawings with the miller one being edited on photoshop to fully utilize the use of black and white print to reflect the style of art he did in Sin City.
The pictures for this were uploaded in last weeks post.

Wednesday:
In the morning I created 4 comic cover mockups in Photoshop using the photographs I scanned in showing different stages of my life, I will then use the mock ups to sketch and paint on the paper I also stretched on Wednesday morning.

In Art History we discussed abstract work of art and how expression was used through brush strokes and colour blocks.

Friday:
On Friday in the morning I took two sets of photographs showing stages of me coming into college to represent my first day and a set showing me working on my FMP, I then took the photos into graphics and created my final 2 mock ups. I finished the day by finishing off my artist research.
I will upload the pictures of my mock ups either Tuesday or Wednesday and I plan to get to work on my final pieces all this week.

FMP week 6

Tuesday:
On Tuesday I painted a self portrait of mine in the style of Jack Kirby using predominantly flat bright colors. I also finished off my Bruce Timm style piece by painting onto an acetate trace of my portrait and painting a background onto black paper before layering the acetate over the background.

Wednesday:

In the morning I went to the mac room to finish off some research for my final couple of portraits looking at the art of Frank Miller, Mike Mignola and Skottie Young.

In graphics I looked at the title cards used in comicbooks, planned how to make one for next lesson and I plotted out my template guides for my comic covers.

In Art History we discussed our painting critical analysis with the class.

Friday:

On Friday I produced 2 self portraits in the styles of Frank Miller (basing my work on his art style used in his Sin City books) and Mike Mignola focusing on the geometry involved in his work.

Today I finished by colouring the two, paints with Miller, pencils with Mignola and then edited the Miller one in photoshop to test how it would work.
