Back to college, The Figure week 1

After a long, weird half term I'm back at college and this time we're working on the figure.
Here's what I got up to last week.

Tuesday:
In the morning in visual studies we practiced doing self portraits using mirrors and trying to work with proportions using a measuring stick. We were then told to research some artists who work in portraits and to experiment with various media on photocopies of our self portraits.

Then in the afternoon we worked with welding metal and began trying to create facial features out of wire.

Wednesday:
In textiles in the morning, we learnt how to make felt using wool and I created a sheet of patterned felt. Then I moved to the other room to have a go at pushing the felt into material.

In graphics we started a new qualification project in which we are going to design the cover to our autobiographies, and we started this week by researching portrait artists and posted the research on a new blog, found here http://luketomlinsonl3adgraphicsportraits.blogspot.co.uk/

Then in Art History we created informative posters about the creative industry

Friday:
To ease us into life drawing we produced a facial portrait of our life model and likewise with the self portraits had to work with measuring sticks to keep the figure in proportion, something I found difficult and I need to practice more.

In the afternoon for Photography we have begun work on our Townscape project and started by researching Townscape artists and Double Exposure artists, then we had a go at creating Double Exposure images ourselves in Photoshop using layers.

In art history we arranged our folders and did some paperwork.

Photoshop

In testing out Photoshop, we scanned in our pencil drawings from our sketch books using the Image capture software.
We changed the image size from 21.56cm-29.68cm to 26.99cm-18.76cm keeping the resolution at 150DPI to in order to use up less memory. WE should use a resolution of 72DPI for small images for blog use and 300DPI for final images to print.
We cropped the image to the designated area using the crop tool then resized the image in the image size field keeping the width and height in constrained proportions.
We used the Rectangle select, Elliptical, and magic wand select tool to select areas of our images.
Then added new layers
and used the paint bucket tool
and the hue/saturation tool to change the colors of the image.
We then added filters and effects to the image to make them look more dynamic.
We were then showed how to take screenshots on the Macs which is cmd shift 3 to take a full screenshot and cmd shift 4 to select a partial area for screenshots.

6th post

Tuesday:
In the morning I started a new painting of the still life set up, getting the basic shapes formed and now just the detail needs adding in and in the afternoon after a tutorial session on what we should have in our sketch books, I finished off any incomplete work.

Wednesday:
In textiles I created a new design on the sewing machine and I have now gotten used to drawing on them.
For graphics we recapped about layers and then experimented in adding filters and changing the colours in various ways, such as the hue. We also learnt how to create screen captures on the macs.
Then in Art History we worked on a presentation about the film industry to be presented next lesson.

Friday:
We used the press to print our lino designs onto various backgrounds experimenting with dry paper, wet paper and turpentine. For the afternoon we were in photography were for the first half of the lesson we learnt to use Adobe bridge to make contact sheets and for the second half we learnt about the cameras and how to control the aperture and focus.

5th post

Tuesday:
For the the first half of the day, we started to produce a painting of the still life set up, using only red, yellow, blue, brown and white paint so that we could experiment in mixing colours and adding water to the paint.
In the afternoon we created plaster relief sculptures using objects pressed into clay and then set in Plaster of Paris.

Wednesday:
We used the sewing machines in textiles to get used to how they work and techniques to use with them. When we were comfortable in using the machines, we moved on to drawing with the thread.
In the afternoon we first learnt the basics of Photoshop in graphics such as adding new layers, selecting areas and filling areas with colour and for art history we began looking at specific careers using art.

Friday:
We continued working on our painting from Tuesday looking to add more detail.
Then in the afternoon we worked with the cameras for photography looking at depth of field which is to define how much focus is wanted on the background of an object

First half of the day we were drawing natural forms with Mark working with shells and stones and experimenting with pen and ink media. In the afternoon we continued to work on our 3D bird skulls and got a second white coating painted on mine.

Wednesday:
Begun the day in textiles where I continued to work on my test weave and managed to get it completed and it just needs removing from the board. In the afternoon we had graphics with Mandy and learnt about cropping and resizing an image on Photoshop. After graphics we had art history where we finished looking at what makes up artwork and begun looking at other artists and artwork

Although not part of my college work, I also worked on this 3 hour charcoal drawing Sunday night and Monday morning. enjoy :)

3rd post

Tuesday we started the day doing still life drawings with Mark focusing on tone, line and negative space and later in the afternoon we continued to work on our 3D bird skulls. I got the structure completed and begun painting it white.

Wednesday we went on the Liverpool trip and visited the Walker gallery and the Tate museum. I preferred the Tate because I felt the paintings and sculptures were of a higher quality compared to the Walker gallery.

Friday we started doing more still life drawings with Mark in the exhibition space and we used conte crayon and using line to add tone. Later in the afternoon we did photography and were introduced to Photoshop so we could touch up the photographs we took the previous week.
