Vision Week 3

Wednesday:
Wednesday we went to Yorkshire sculpture park and you can see my photographs from the visit in my earlier post. It was vast and great and I particularly enjoyed the Orta exhibit and Sophie Ryder's work.

Thursday:

Thursday in art history we wrote up about the trip (again see the previous post) and we did life drawing in the afternoon, I'm getting back into drawing figure now I feel judging by my drawings

Friday:
Friday I split my day into looking at my two focus areas, For the majority of the day I focused my work on my painting, I'm not too happy with it but will give it another few hours work before I say I'm done with it. It's not meant to be a finalized piece but I just want it to look good.


In the last couple of hours I began work on some relief sculpture development by mapping out on a piece of white board the levels of depth.

Josephson's work was the opening to the gallery

This sculpture was my favorite of his pieces but I wasn't fond of his other work

I like the textures created with these pieces but I'm not fond of the form

I'm not keen on the abstractness of the pieces which is why I prefer the first figure sculpture

What I do like about his work is the organic style of the piece and how it fits into the scenery

Masayuki Koorida creates granite sculptures

What I like about them is the smoothness of the sculptures

Brian Fell - the HaHa bridge

Barbara Hepworth

She creates geometric sculptures focusing on shapes stacked together

These sculptures come in a variety of mediums including wood and bronze

I like the difference in texture on the piece how both smooth and rough edges have been used on the piece

Lynn Chadwick - Seated female figures

Cloaked Figure IX, these pieces are striking in the aspect is the geometry and their triangular heads, there's something eerie with these pieces and a sense of mystery

Nikki de St Phalle - Buddah

What I like about this piece in particular is are the colours and patterns, it's really pops out of the scenery and is very surreal

William Turnbull - Large Horse

Marcia Farquah - The Horse is a noble animal
I like this piece, the mass scale of it is brilliant and has context of reliving childhood in regards to the rocking horse being larger than the viewer

Sophie Ryder - Crawling

I like these pieces of sculpture, the scale and detail on the piece is brilliant. It is created using plaster and I like the context of the piece as it's an odd subject matter

Magdalena Abakanowicz
I like the colours on these pieces and how the orange colour has eroded away, it gives a nice sense of time

Sophie Ryder - Sitting

This is another piece I like, same reasons as her other large rabbit, I perhaps prefer the other, but the scale on this piece is phenomenal and standing aside it shows the grandness of the size

Peter Liversige - Everything is connected

Michael Zwinggann - Invasion
This piece resembles man's intrusion on nature by showing sculptures looking like hay bales scattered in the middle of a field and this links to the title of the piece "invasion"

Anthony Caro - Promenade
I like the shape of this piece and the curves created in the sculpture, I like how they curl around all the other shapes in a sense of geometry

Sol LeWitt's brick piece is a good example of minimalist work, although I don't think much of it at first sight, had it not been there would have left an empty space in the garden. It fits in nicely with the scenery and works well as a piece of sculpture

James Capper -Tread Pad pair one
This piece reminds me of some kind of medieval device but with the twist of bright colours and simplicity. It has a toy like fashion based on it's smooth shape and bright colours but the spiked edges take that innocence away

Lucy and Jorge Orta -Ubelka

This piece by the Orta's was one of my favorite pieces in the park, I had been looking forward to seeing this piece on visiting and it was well worth it

The smooth texture on the sculpture reminds the viewer that the sculpture is a spirit and delecate, whilst the detail level is so concentrated that the piece looks impossible to not be a real person. Clearly a skilled piece of art.

I like this piece for the practicality o the piece and it goes to show that you can create a good looking piece of art using everyday found objects

Their clouds pieces were the second thing I was excited to be seeing at the YSP and they are a really interesting piece. The bottles create an interesting shape to the piece and is then cast in resin. It's a hard smooth sculpture to touch and is very solid and stable.

The ideas behind the piece is something surreal and seeing what is capable from recycled materials is really something beautiful

Raft of Medusa
This piece shows the use of everyday items to create a work of art. Not as strong as the other cloud pieces I don't think, but the use of colour and playfulness of the animal sculptures more than makes up for that

I really enjoyed the Orta pieces and would consider going to the sculpture park again just to see her work, it's something you don't see everyday and seeing it and feeling it in person was a great experience

In conclusion to the trip, after seeing the pieces by Josephson and Jorge and Lucy Orta up close, I warmed up a little to the work of Josephson since prior to the trip I wasn't fond of his work although after seeing it displayed in the surroundings it is in I did like some elements to his pieces like the texture and how it works into the scenery like carved stone.
The Orta pieces I really enjoyed, minus the long walk to the gallery, but seeing their work up close and being able to touch it was something spectacular and the scale of their work in comparison to how they look in pictures works well in their surroundings



Context

Where they are placed, positioned and relation to history. How history relates to ideas and modern art. Context :- definition
The situation with which something exists or happens, and that can help explain it.

Immediate environment :- The location of the artwork. What is surrounding the work when you explore it close-up.

Wider environment: The bigger picture of where it is location e.g in a gallery or a public space.

Historical Context: The history behind the artwork, What period does it originate?
The artist and what era they belong to. The history of the places in which the artwork is located.

Personal experience:-the experience of the individual or group of individuals viewing the work.
